Discover more about Alte Rheinbrücke

The Alte Rheinbrücke is more than just a bridge; it's a symbol of connection and a testament to historical engineering. Constructed in the 1870s, it stands as the sole survivor of the many covered wooden bridges that once dotted the Rhine Valley. The bridge is 135 meters long and six meters wide. It was designed using the Howe system, which combines diagonal wooden pressure elements with vertical metal tension elements. This allowed the structure to be pre-stressed and readjusted as needed. In the past, river crossings relied on ferries until a project in the 1860s controlled the Rhine's flow, enabling bridge construction. Sevelen decided to construct the bridge in 1870 to replace the Rhine ferry. The bridge was completed in September 1871 at a cost of CHF 28,000. Around 1900, the bridge structure was replaced. Since 1973, it has been open only to pedestrians and cyclists. Crossing the Alte Rheinbrücke offers a unique experience. As you walk or cycle, you're treated to panoramic views of the Rhine River and the surrounding landscapes. The bridge provides a tangible link between Switzerland and Liechtenstein, making it a memorable experience.
