Discover more about Burg Gutenberg

Burg Gutenberg, rising 70 meters above the town of Balzers, is one of Liechtenstein's best-preserved castles. Its origins trace back to the early 12th century when it began as a medieval church and cemetery. Fortification of the site commenced with the addition of a surrounding wall, transforming it into a simple keep. Throughout the 12th and 13th centuries, the castle was owned by the Lords of Frauenberg. In 1314, it became property of the House of Habsburg and was primarily used to guard the borderlands. The castle saw extensive reconstruction in the 15th century, initiated by Emperor Maximilian I. Over the centuries, Burg Gutenberg transitioned from a military stronghold to a residential site around 1750. A fire in 1795 damaged the castle, and its remains were used as building materials to reconstruct Balzers. In the early 20th century, architect Egon Rheinberger led a restoration, adding a chapel and other structures. Today, the castle hosts cultural events and concerts, especially during the Kultursommer. Though the castle doesn't house a museum, archaeological finds from the site, including the Mars von Gutenberg figurine, are displayed at the Liechtenstein National Museum. The bailey is open to visitors year-round, free of charge.
