Discover more about Obere Burg

Obere Burg, also known as Burg Neu-Schellenberg, sits in the municipality of Schellenberg as a reminder of Liechtenstein's rich history. Constructed around 1200, the castle's first written record dates to 1348. It was likely inhabited until the 16th century before being abandoned. Over the centuries, it fell into disrepair, losing its military significance. In 1956, Prince Franz Joseph II gifted the overgrown ruins to the Historical Association of the Principality of Liechtenstein, who now oversee its preservation. Today, visitors can explore the remains of this once-imposing structure, including the gate, walls and buildings. The site is open to tourists and offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and imagine life in the Middle Ages. The castle also hosts events, including the Princely Liechtenstein Tattoo, a music festival. Located in the Hinterschloss area of Schellenberg, Obere Burg is easily accessible. It is a popular destination offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Rhine Valley and the Alps.
