Fürstensteig: A Princely Hiking Trail

Fürstensteig, meaning "Prince's Way" in German, is one of Liechtenstein's most iconic and exhilarating hiking trails. This high-altitude route, dating back to its establishment in 1898, is not for the faint of heart, demanding sure-footedness and a head for heights. The trail is characterized by its narrow paths carved into the cliffs, secured with wire cables and railings, offering both protection and unparalleled views. The adventure begins at Gaflei, approximately 1,400 meters above sea level. From there, the path winds through alpine meadows and past mountain pines, gradually ascending to reveal breathtaking panoramas of Vaduz, Schaan, and the Rhine Valley. As hikers progress, they're treated to views of the majestic Drei Schwestern (Three Sisters) peaks. The trail continues, passing below the Schrofen mountain peak and through a gap near Helwangs peak, eventually leading to the Kamin (Chimney), a particularly steep section. Along the route, hikers can appreciate the diverse alpine flora and fauna, and perhaps even spot local wildlife such as chamois or various bird species.
