Sassweg Hiking Trail: A Scenic Alpine Escape

The Sassweg hiking trail, located in the charming village of Malbun, Liechtenstein, is a popular destination for those seeking a gentle and scenic alpine experience. This well-maintained circular route meanders through verdant meadows, past mountain pines, and across a rolling landscape dotted with sunny hollows. The trail is particularly known for its accessibility, making it suitable for hikers of all ages and abilities. Starting near the Friedenskapelle (Peace Chapel), the highest place of worship in Liechtenstein, the path gradually ascends, offering panoramic views of Malbun and the surrounding Alps. The route is especially enchanting in winter, when high walls of snow line the trail, creating a magical winter wonderland. However, the trail is also a delight in the summer, with wildflowers blooming in vibrant colors and the air filled with the sounds of nature. Approximately halfway along the loop, a short detour leads to a viewpoint with binoculars and a barbecue area, perfect for a scenic break. The trail then continues past the Sass-Seeli pond before descending through Alp Sass back towards Malbun. Along the way, keep an eye out for the "Wildmandli," small stone figures that hikers can build and measure. The Sassweg is also known as the Explorer Path, with ten stops that allow families to become naturalists. Explorer equipment can be rented at the Malbun Tourist Center.
