Grossratsgebäude: Seat of Graubünden's Parliament
Discover Chur's Grossratsgebäude: A historic landmark housing Graubünden's parliament, blending Neo-Renaissance architecture with modern design.
The Grossratsgebäude (Grand Council Building) in Chur is the seat of the cantonal parliament of Graubünden. Located just north of the Old Town, near the Chur Theatre, this building has a rich history. Initially constructed between 1861 and 1863 by architect Johannes Ludwig, the building served as an armory in the Neo-Renaissance style. In 1959, architect Martin Risch redesigned the structure, dividing it to house both the parliament and the theatre. A new entrance was designed by Valerio Olgiati and Tamara Olgiati between 2008 and 2009. Inside the Grossratsgebäude's Grand Council Chamber, visitors can see 40 coats of arms representing the 39 municipalities of Graubünden and the cantonal coat of arms, created in 1960 by Giuseppe Scartezzini. While interior tours may not always be available, the building's exterior offers photo opportunities, and the surrounding streets feature cafes and shops.
