Discover more about Waaghaus

The Waaghaus, located on Bohl 14 in St. Gallen, is a historically significant building dating back to 1584-1585. Built by city architect Wolfgang Fögeli, it initially served as a trade hall where merchants' goods were weighed, taxed, and stored. The name 'Waaghaus' derives from the German word 'Waag,' meaning scale, reflecting its original function. Over the centuries, the Waaghaus has adapted to the changing needs of the city. In 1876, a post office branch was opened in the Waaghaus, remaining there until a renovation in 1958. In a public vote in 1958, the people of St. Gallen decided to preserve and renovate the Waaghaus. Today, the ground floor hosts various events, such as Christmas markets. The upper floor contains a hall used for exhibitions and concerts, as well as the council chamber for St. Gallen's city parliament. The Waaghaus stands at the eastern end of the Marktplatz, a central location in the Old Town. Its open ground floor, characterized by arches, creates a welcoming atmosphere. Throughout the year, the Waaghaus hosts around 100 events, contributing to the vibrancy of St. Gallen's city center.
