Vaduz Castle: Liechtenstein's Royal Residence

Vaduz Castle, the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein, stands as a proud symbol of the nation's capital. Towering 120 meters above Vaduz on a hilltop, its origins trace back to the 12th century when it served as a fortress controlling key Alpine trade routes. The keep, or bergfried, is the oldest part of the castle, dating back to the 12th century. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous expansions and renovations. It was first mentioned in 1322. The Liechtenstein family acquired the castle in 1712. It fell into disrepair but was restored in the early 20th century. Prince Franz Josef II moved into the castle in 1939 and made it his permanent residence. While the castle's interior is not open to the public, except for the gardens on Liechtenstein's National Day (August 15th) , its exterior is a sight to behold. Visitors can walk or drive up to the castle for panoramic views of Vaduz and the surrounding Alps. The walk from the town center takes about 20-30 minutes along a marked path with historical information. The castle's architecture reflects various periods, with the eastern side and keep showcasing its medieval origins and the western side displaying Baroque influences. Although glimpses beyond its walls are limited, the castle remains a must-see landmark, embodying Liechtenstein's history and the enduring presence of its royal family.
