    From the Feldkirch train station, walk along Wichnergasse and take the Bettlerstiege (131 steps) to reach the castle in approximately 15 minutes. Alternatively, walk through the Neustadt and Burggasse to reach the castle in about 5 minutes.

    From Feldkirch Bahnhof (train station), take bus line 404 or 405 to Domplatz. From Domplatz, walk along Neustadt and Burggasse for about 5 minutes to reach the castle. A single bus fare costs around €2-3.

    Take the A14 highway and exit at Feldkirch-Frastanz. Follow the signs towards Feldkirch, and after entering the town, turn right at the first traffic light. Follow Schloßsteig to the large castle parking lot. Parking fees are charged from Monday to Friday, 8:00-12:00 and 13:30-18:00, and on Saturdays from 8:00-12:00. Parking costs €0.90 per hour, with a daily rate of €4.00.

The name Schattenburg is believed to be derived from the German word "schatten," meaning protection or shield, reflecting its role as a defensive stronghold. Throughout its history, Schattenburg has been involved in several wars and sieges, including the Appenzell Wars in the early 15th century. It was briefly captured and set ablaze but was rebuilt. Over the centuries, the castle underwent modifications and served various purposes, including use as barracks and a poorhouse. In 1825, the city of Feldkirch acquired the castle, rescuing it from ruin. Today, Schattenburg houses a museum showcasing the region's history, folk culture, and medieval life. The museum features 18 rooms with exhibits ranging from medieval weaponry to artifacts of daily life.
