Vaduz Castle Travel Guide

Vaduz Castle, the prominent landmark of Liechtenstein's capital, has a rich history stretching back to the 12th century. Originally built as a fortress by the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans, it served to control key Alpine Pass trade routes. The castle's oldest sections include the keep (bergfried) and parts of the eastern walls. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous expansions and renovations, reflecting various architectural styles.The Liechtenstein family acquired the castle in 1712, and it became part of the Principality of Liechtenstein in 1719. Though they took ownership in 1712, they did not make it their official residence until 1732. It fell into disrepair but was restored in the early 20th century. In 1938, Prince Franz Josef II made it his family's permanent residence, a tradition that continues today.Overlooking the city of Vaduz from a height of around 120 meters, the castle provides stunning views of the Rhine Valley and the Swiss Alps. While the castle's interior is generally closed to the public, visitors can explore the exterior and surrounding grounds.
