Afrika Nature Reserve: A Hidden Gem in Buchs

Afrika Nature Reserve, despite its name, is a local nature preserve in Buchs, Switzerland, not related to the African continent. This 26,197 square meter area of meadows, water, and woods provides a habitat for various animal species and a peaceful retreat for nature enthusiasts.The reserve originated from former Rhine riverbanks and was initially owned by the local community of Buchs. During the construction of the national highway, the land was transferred to the canton, which then created a biotope, including the Afrika-See (Lake Africa). In 2006, the canton ceded the land back to the municipality of Buchs. Today, the political municipality and members of the ornithological association maintain the area.Visitors can observe various waterfowl, including mallards, tufted ducks, common pochards, goosanders, and smews. The area is also home to various dragonfly species, grass snakes, and rare types of grasshoppers. The Kingfisher can also be spotted.
