Discover more about Schattenburg

Schattenburg Castle, perched high above the town of Feldkirch in Vorarlberg, is one of Austria's best-preserved medieval castles. Constructed around 1200 by Hugo I of Montfort, the castle served as the residence for the Counts of Montfort for nearly two centuries. Its name, derived from the German word for "protection" or "shield," reflects its historical role as a defensive stronghold. Over the centuries, Schattenburg has witnessed numerous wars and changes in ownership. After the Montforts, the Habsburgs gained control until the municipality of Feldkirch purchased the partially ruined castle in 1825. It served as military barracks and a poorhouse in the 1800s before being transformed into a museum. Today, Schattenburg houses a fascinating museum spread across eighteen rooms, each dedicated to different aspects of Feldkirch's city history. Visitors can explore original interiors, view collections of sacred and secular art, and examine weapons from the Middle Ages to World War II. The castle also features a restaurant, offering a unique dining experience within its historic walls. Guided tours are available, providing deeper insights into the castle's history and the lives of those who once inhabited it. The keep offers stunning views of Feldkirch and the surrounding area.
