Schattenburg Castle: A Medieval Marvel in Feldkirch

Schattenburg Castle, perched high above the town of Feldkirch in Vorarlberg, is one of Austria's best-preserved medieval castles. Constructed around 1200 by Hugo I of Montfort, the castle served as the residence for the Counts of Montfort for nearly two centuries. After the Montforts, the Habsburgs gained control until the municipality of Feldkirch purchased the partially ruined castle in 1825. It served as military barracks and a poorhouse in the 1800s before being transformed into a museum. Today, Schattenburg houses a fascinating museum spread across eighteen rooms, each dedicated to different aspects of Feldkirch's city history.
