Getting There

Walking

From Vaduz's main street (Städtle), follow the brown signs for 'Schloss' (Castle). Head towards Brasserie Burg, and take Haldenweg, the inclined path uphill. The walk takes about 20-30 minutes. Note that the path is steep, but manageable for those in reasonable physical condition. There are no costs associated with walking to the castle.
Driving

From the center of Vaduz, follow signs for 'Schloss Vaduz'. Turn onto Feldstrasse from the main road. Continue past the Prince of Liechtenstein's cellars. A parking area is located just past the castle on Bergstrasse. Parking costs 0.5 CHF per hour after the first free hour. There are no tolls on this route.
Public Transport

While there is no direct public transport to the castle, the LIEmobil bus network connects Vaduz to nearby towns. From the Vaduz, Städtle bus stop, it is approximately a 20-30 minute walk uphill to Vaduz Castle. Bus tickets within Vaduz cost approximately 2 CHF for a short ride. A day ticket for all zones costs 12 CHF.

Vaduz Castle, or Schloss Vaduz in German, stands as a proud symbol of Liechtenstein, towering 120 meters above the capital city. Its origins trace back to the 12th century, with the keep and eastern sections representing the oldest parts of the structure. Originally built by the counts of Werdenberg-Sargans, the castle served as a fortress to control Alpine trade routes and the local population.Over the centuries, Vaduz Castle has undergone numerous expansions and renovations, resulting in a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural styles. The castle's strategic position on a hilltop offers commanding views of the Rhine Valley and surrounding landscapes. In 1499, the Swiss Confederacy burned the castle during the Swabian War, leading to subsequent expansions, including the western side by Count Kaspar von Hohenems in the early 17th century.The Liechtenstein family acquired Vaduz Castle in 1712, and it became the official residence in 1732. Prince Franz Josef II made it his permanent home in 1939, and it remains the residence of the Princely Family today. While the castle is not open to the public, it stands as a powerful reminder of Liechtenstein's regal past and present.
