The building itself has a rich history, originally built in 1848 as a residence for a jewelry manufacturer named Güllich. Later, in 1887, it was acquired by Gustav Prinz von und zu Thurn und Taxis, giving the Palais its name. The city of Bregenz took ownership in 1915. Since 1953, the Künstlerhaus has been the seat of the professional association of visual artists in Vorarlberg. The association is responsible for the program at Künstlerhaus Bregenz. The gallery's exhibitions feature a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, and multimedia installations. The exhibitions change monthly and the Palais hosts international programs each year. In the summer, the Palais hosts the state capital's official summer exhibition. The villa is surrounded by a beautiful park, which contains exotic and native trees. The garden was created in 1887 by Gustav Prinz von und zu Thurn und Taxis and is considered one of Austria's most important garden monuments.
