Discover more about Schattenburg

Schattenburg Castle, towering over Feldkirch in Vorarlberg, is one of Austria's best-preserved medieval castles. Constructed around 1200 by Count Hugo I of Montfort, the castle served as the residence for the Dukes of Montfort until 1390. The name Schattenburg is believed to be derived from the German word 'schatten', meaning protection, reflecting its role as a defensive stronghold. Throughout its history, Schattenburg has witnessed numerous conflicts and undergone several renovations. It was occupied by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War in 1647. In 1825, the town of Feldkirch acquired the castle, which had served as barracks and a poorhouse. Today, Schattenburg houses a museum with eighteen rooms showcasing Feldkirch's city history, medieval weaponry, and sacred art. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved rooms, courtyards, and the keep, which offers panoramic views of Feldkirch. The Schattenburg Museum offers a family experience into the past with a quiz, audio guide, or guided tour. Public guided tours are available every Wednesday evening from May to October.
