Established in 1890, the museum has moved through several locations before finding its current home. Originally located in Vaduz Castle, the collection moved to the National Bank building in 1954 and was officially named the National Museum. In 1967, the government purchased the Taverne zum Adler building and renovated it to house the museum, reopening in 1972. After damage in 1992, the museum underwent renovation and expansion, reopening in its current form in 2003.
