Getting There

• Public Bus

  To reach the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge from downtown Lake Charles, you can take the public bus operated by the Lake Charles Transit System. Start at the Lake Charles Transit Center located at 1000 Ryan St. Board Bus Route 6, which heads towards the Lake Charles Civic Center. You will need to transfer to Bus Route 7 at the Civic Center stop. Stay on Route 7 until you reach the stop at 'Bell City'. From there, it's about a 15-minute walk to the refuge. Head south on LA-27 for approximately 0.7 miles, and you will see the entrance to the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge on your right.

• Bicycle Rental

  If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in downtown Lake Charles. Once you have your bike, head south on Common St towards LA-27. Continue on LA-27 for about 12 miles. The route is primarily straight and will lead you directly to the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge. Be cautious of traffic, as LA-27 is a busy road. After reaching the refuge, you can park your bike at the designated area.

• Walking

  Walking to Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge is an option if you're feeling adventurous and are staying nearby. Start at the intersection of Ryan St and Common St in downtown Lake Charles. Head south on Common St until it becomes LA-27. Continue walking on LA-27 for approximately 12 miles. This will take about 4 hours on foot, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated. As you approach the refuge, you will find signs guiding you to the entrance.
