Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're traveling by car from the center of Ihorombe, head towards the RN7 road. Continue south on the RN7 until you reach the town of Ranohira. The Isalo Rock Lodge is located just outside of Ranohira. As you approach Ranohira, look for signs indicating the lodge. It will be approximately 15 kilometers from the RN7 turnoff into Ranohira. Drive carefully as the road can be winding and narrow in parts. Once you see the sign for Isalo Rock Lodge, follow the unpaved road for about 1 kilometer until you reach the lodge.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, you can take a taxi-brousse (shared minibus) from Ihorombe to Ranohira. The taxi-brousse typically departs from the main station in Ihorombe and costs around 10,000 Ariary (approximately $2.50). The journey takes about 2-3 hours depending on the number of stops. Once you arrive in Ranohira, you can either walk or take a local taxi to reach Isalo Rock Lodge, which is about 15 kilometers from the town center. Expect to pay around 20,000 Ariary (approximately $5) for a local taxi ride.
Combination (Car + Walk)
If you have access to a car but prefer to park in Ranohira, you can drive to the town and then walk to Isalo Rock Lodge. Park your car in a safe area in Ranohira and walk towards the lodge, which is about a 1.5-hour walk from the town center. Follow the main road out of town and look for the signs leading you to the lodge. This option allows you to enjoy the landscape on foot but be prepared for a long walk.
