• Public Transportation

  To reach the African Burying Ground Memorial at 386 State Street, Portsmouth, NH from Ogunquit, start by taking the Ogunquit Shuttle. Head to the nearest shuttle stop, which is usually located downtown near the beach. Board the shuttle heading towards Wells. Once you reach Wells, transfer to the public bus service (Coastal Maine Transit). Take the bus going to Portsmouth, NH. Enjoy the scenic ride, and keep an eye out for the relevant stops. When you arrive in Portsmouth, ask the driver or check the bus schedule for the stop closest to State Street. Once you get off, walk east on State Street for a few blocks until you see the African Burying Ground Memorial on your left at 386 State Street.

  If you are staying in a central location in Ogunquit and prefer to walk, head towards the Ogunquit Village area. From there, you can follow the Ogunquit River Walk towards the north, which will eventually lead you to the Main Street. Continue north until you reach Route 1, where you can catch a local bus or shuttle towards Portsmouth. Alternatively, it’s about a 5-mile walk; keep in mind that it may take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Ensure to follow the pedestrian paths and be cautious of traffic. Once you reach Portsmouth, navigate to State Street, and you will find the memorial at 386 State Street.

  For those who enjoy cycling, you can rent a bicycle from one of the local shops in Ogunquit. Start by heading north from Ogunquit along Route 1. Be cautious as this road has traffic, but there are bike lanes available. Follow Route 1 until you reach the signs for Portsmouth. Once you arrive in Portsmouth, look for State Street, and continue cycling until you reach the African Burying Ground Memorial located at 386 State Street.
