Car Rental
If you are traveling by car, you can rent a vehicle in Blantyre, which is the nearest major city to Mulanje. From Blantyre, take the A6 road heading south towards Mulanje. After approximately 65 kilometers, you will reach the town of Mulanje. As you enter the town, follow the signs towards the Mulanje Mountain Cultural Centre. This will take you to the base of the mountain where you can find information and guides.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a minibus from Blantyre to Mulanje. These minibuses depart frequently from the main bus station in Blantyre. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and costs around 1,500 MWK (Malawian Kwacha). Once you arrive in Mulanje, request to be dropped off at the Mulanje Mountain Cultural Centre. This is the best starting point for your hike.
Local Guides and Transport
At the Mulanje Mountain Cultural Centre, you can hire local guides who know the trails well. The cost for hiring a guide is typically around 15,000 MWK for a full day. Make sure to also arrange for any additional transportation such as porters if you plan to carry heavy gear. They can assist you in navigating the mountain trails safely.
Hiking Trails
Once you are at the Cultural Centre, you can choose from several established hiking trails that lead to various peaks of Mulanje Mountain. Each trail has different levels of difficulty, so consult with your guide to select one that matches your experience. Ensure you have proper hiking gear, sufficient water, and snacks for your trek.
