Getting there

Car

If you're driving, start from Chikwawa, which is a central point in Shire Valley. Head south on the M1 highway for about 30 kilometers. Look for signs directing you to Lake Chilwa. You will turn off the M1 onto the A-1 road, which will take you directly towards the lake. As you approach, you will see the scenic views of the lake on your right. Ensure to have cash for any tolls or fees along the way.

Public Transportation (Minibus)

From Chikwawa, head to the local minibus station. Take a minibus heading towards Nsanje. After about 30 minutes, ask the driver to drop you off at the turn-off for Lake Chilwa. The fare is typically around 500 MWK (Malawian Kwacha). From the drop-off point, you may need to walk approximately 2 kilometers to reach the lakeside. Make sure to confirm with locals for the best route.

Bicycle (Rental)

If you're feeling adventurous, you can rent a bicycle in Chikwawa. Ride south on the M1 highway for about 30 kilometers, then take the A-1 road towards Lake Chilwa. This option is great for those wanting to enjoy the scenery at a slower pace. Ensure to wear a helmet and carry sufficient water for the ride. Bicycle rentals typically cost around 1500 MWK per day.

Walking
