Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from Zomba, which is a common base for visitors in the Shire Valley. Head south on the M3 towards Liwonde. After approximately 30 kilometers, you will reach the junction to Liwonde National Park. Continue straight on the M3 for another 20 kilometers until you see signs for Lake Malombe. Turn right onto the dirt road that leads directly to the lake. The total drive should take around 1 hour.

Public Transport
For those using public transport, you can take a minibus from Zomba to Liwonde. Buses depart regularly throughout the day and the fare is typically around 1,500 MWK. Once you arrive in Liwonde, you can catch a local taxi or a motorbike taxi (known as 'boda boda') to Lake Malombe. The taxi ride will cost about 2,000 MWK and takes approximately 20 minutes. Make sure to confirm the fare before starting your journey.

Walking
If you're feeling adventurous and are already in the vicinity of the lake, you can also opt to walk to Lake Malombe from nearby areas. From Liwonde, it's roughly a 5 km walk to the lake along the dirt tracks. Just follow the signs towards the lake and enjoy the scenery of the Shire Valley.

Another great way to reach Lake Malombe is by renting a bicycle in Zomba or Liwonde. This allows you to explore the area at your own pace. The bike rental costs around 2,000 MWK per day. From Liwonde, you can cycle along the M3 towards the lake, which is about 20 km away. Make sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen for your ride.
