Nestled in the heart of Taiping, Perak, Antong Coffee Factory stands as Malaysia's oldest coffee mill, founded in 1933 by Tiah Ee Mooi. This third-generation family business preserves time-honored methods, roasting beans over charcoal fires using recycled wood and mangrove logs. The intoxicating aroma of roasting coffee wafts through Kampung Asam Kumbang, drawing visitors from the nearby flyover. Adjacent to the factory is Changchun Garden, once home to Chen Cuifen, lover of revolutionary leader Sun Yat-sen, who stayed here during his Nanyang visits. The site served as a hub for anti-Qing activities, with historical photos and artifacts still displayed, bridging coffee culture and Malayan Chinese history.

Production Process

Step inside to witness the artisanal roasting: beans sourced from Malaysia and abroad are mixed with molten sugar, margarine, and secret ingredients in wood-fired ovens. This yields the distinctive caramel-like flavor of Antong's Kopi 'O', a pre-sweetened black coffee powder. Modern adaptations include over 20 products like white coffee mixes, golden coffee, durian white coffee, chocolate malt, and Liu Puo Tea. The factory operates mornings, with tours showcasing the hands-on process that has endured for nearly a century despite modern machinery temptations.

Visitor Experience

The showroom offers free tastings of hot brews, iced lattes, honey lemon aloe vera drinks, and Malaysia's unique espresso ice cream. Seating areas allow sampling amid coffee museum exhibits on drinking culture. Purchase packets of signature blends or souvenirs. While factory tours highlight production, the attached shop focuses on retail, with occasional organized groups. The site blends education, indulgence, and nostalgia, perfect for coffee enthusiasts.
