Havittha: Echoes of Fuvahmulah's Buddhist Past

Havittha, situated in the northern part of Fuvahmulah, stands as a poignant reminder of the island's pre-Islamic heritage. This historical landmark is the ruin of a Buddhist stupa, marking the site of what was once a significant monastic complex. Known locally as Fua Mulaku Havitta, it was historically located in the Dhadimagu ward, which was the last area on the island to embrace Islam.Before its conversion, Dhadimagu served as the epicenter of the island's Buddhist community. Following the conversion in the early 1200s, the stupa was intentionally buried under a mound of earth, and a nearby temple was repurposed into Gemmiskiy, the island's first mosque. This act symbolized the transition to a new faith and the end of an era.Over the centuries, Havittha has endured the ravages of time and human intervention. In 1922, H.C.P. Bell, a British archaeologist, documented the site, noting the main stupa stood approximately 40 feet tall, with a smaller mound nearby. However, subsequent excavations in the 1940s, led by Adam Naseer Manik, further altered the landscape, and much of the ruins have since disappeared.Today, Havittha offers visitors a chance to connect with Fuvahmulah's layered past. While the visible remains are limited, the site's historical significance and tranquil atmosphere make it a compelling destination for those interested in the Maldives' rich cultural heritage. Recent discoveries in the surrounding area, including cowry shells and pre-Islamic artifacts, hint at the potential for further archaeological insights.
