Discover more about Muliaage (Palace)

Muliaage, situated in the historic center of Malé, serves as the official residence of the President of the Maldives. Constructed between 1914 and 1919, the palace was commissioned by Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen III for his son, Prince Hassan Izzuddin. The architecture reflects a colonial bungalow style, reminiscent of those popular in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) during that era.The name 'Muliaage' translates to 'new house of Muli,' as it was built on the site of Mulee'ge, the ancestral home of Shamsuddeen. Although intended as a royal residence, it never served as a Sultan's palace. Over the years, Muliaage has functioned as the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Prime Minister's office, and even the Supreme Court. It officially became the Presidential Palace in 1953 during the First Republic.Visitors can admire the palace's intricate carvings, vibrant colors, and well-maintained gardens. The bright pink roof and blue and white façade make it a striking landmark. While the interior is closed to the public, the exterior provides ample photo opportunities and a chance to appreciate Maldivian heritage. The palace is conveniently located near other significant landmarks such as the Medhu Ziyaaraiy, the Friday Mosque, and the Munnaru.
