Discover more about Lake Laamu

Lake Laamu is a captivating natural attraction located in Fonadhoo, in the Laamu Atoll of the Maldives. Known for its serene beauty, the lake features crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush, verdant landscapes, offering a tranquil escape from the everyday hustle. The lake is considered a Gaamathee Rah - an island formed on a coral mountain, facing one side to the bay (Etherevari) and the other side to the open sea (Fuhtaru-Huvadhoo Kandu). Divers have tried to reach the bottom of the mangrove pool, but are blocked by the mangrove tree roots and other fallen tree debris which have accumulated at the lower levels. The top layer of the mangrove is fresh water, and the deeper you go, the water turns colder and saltier. The mangrove is said to be almost 20 meters deep, and no light reaches beyond a certain point under water, making it pitch black even with a flashlight. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, take leisurely walks around the lake, and immerse themselves in the stunning natural scenery. The surrounding area is perfect for birdwatching and enjoying the diverse flora and fauna of the Maldives. Lake Laamu is an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet retreat and a chance to connect with nature in one of the most beautiful settings in the world.
