Discover more about Muliaage (Palace)

Muliaage, located in the Henveiru ward of Malé, is the official residence of the President of the Maldives. Constructed between 1914 and 1919, it was commissioned by Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen III for his son, Prince Hassan Izzuddin. The palace's design, reminiscent of colonial bungalows in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), was conceived by Ahmed Dhoshimeyna Kilegefan. Originally intended as a royal home, Muliaage has served diverse roles, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Prime Minister's office, and even the Supreme Court. In 1968, it was declared the Presidential Palace by President Ibrahim Nasir. The building's architecture features a bright pink roof, an intricate mosaic gate, and a blue and white façade. Although visitors cannot enter the premises, they can admire the structure from the outside. Located on Medhuziyaarai Magu, Muliaage is close to other landmarks like the Medhu Ziyaaraiy shrine, the Malé Friday Mosque, and the Munnaru. The Medhu Ziyaaraiy, which houses the tomb of Abu al-Barakat Yusuf al-Barbari, who is believed to have introduced Islam to the Maldives, is now an exclave of Muliaage.
