Discover more about Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah, meaning 'Island of the Areca nut palms,' is a geographically unique and historically significant island in the Maldives. Unlike most Maldivian islands that form part of atolls, Fuvahmulah stands alone as a single-island atoll, a characteristic stemming from its volcanic origin. Located just south of the equator, it's the third-largest island in the archipelago and is known for its fertile soil and lush vegetation. Historically, Fuvahmulah was challenging to reach due to the lack of a natural harbor. However, this seclusion has helped preserve the island's unique culture and environment. The island boasts a rich history, with remnants of Buddhist stupas like the Fua Mulaku Havitta, predating the island's conversion to Islam. Gemmiskiy, the island's oldest mosque, was originally part of a Buddhist monastery. Today, Fuvahmulah is gaining recognition as a world-class diving destination, particularly for its abundant shark populations. Divers from around the globe come to witness tiger sharks, thresher sharks, hammerheads, and other pelagic species in their natural habitat. Beyond diving, Fuvahmulah offers unique experiences such as surfing at Thoondu beach, the only beach break in the Maldives, exploring freshwater lakes like Bandaara Kulhi and Dhadimagi Kilhi, and immersing oneself in the local culture. The island is divided into eight municipal districts, each contributing to the island's vibrant community. Fishing and agriculture remain important aspects of local life, alongside the growing tourism sector. Fuvahmulah offers a unique blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an authentic Maldivian experience.
