Koagannu Park: A Journey Through Time

Koagannu Park, located in Meedhoo, Addu Atoll, is a historical treasure trove, serving as the oldest cemetery in the Maldives. Established approximately 900 years ago, it was created as the final resting place for the first Muslims of the Addu Atoll. The name Meedhoo itself, possibly over 3000 years old, translates to 'Big Island' in Sanskrit, hinting at the island's ancient roots.Within the park's boundaries lies the Fandiyaaru Miskiy (Mosque of the Judge), dating back to the 12th century. This mosque was constructed by Chief Justice Mohamed Shamsuddine after he was exiled from Malé. The intricate coral carvings and Dhives Akuru script on the tombstones showcase the craftsmanship of early Meedhoo inhabitants. The largest tombstone in the Maldives, believed to belong to an 18th-century royal, stands within Koagannu.During World War II, British forces used the area as a staging post, leaving behind remnants of bunkers that add another layer to the site's history. Koagannu is more than just a cemetery; it's a testament to the architectural skills, religious devotion, and cultural evolution of the Maldivian people.
