Discover more about Maison Africaine de la Photographie - MAP

The Maison Africaine de la Photographie (MAP), or African House of Photography, is a public establishment in Bamako, Mali, dedicated to the promotion, collection, conservation, and dissemination of photographic works by Malian and African artists. It is located within the National Library of Mali. Established in 2004, MAP was created to manage the growing success of the Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie, also known as the Bamako Encounters, an international photography biennale that has taken place since 1994. MAP serves as the headquarters for the biennale's general direction. The Bamako Encounters is a significant cultural event in Africa, promoting contemporary photography and video from across the continent and fostering international exchange among artists, curators, and the public. Photography holds a special place in Malian culture. The medium arrived in the 1880s and evolved into a powerful means of visual expression and social commentary. Malian photographers like Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta gained international recognition for their black-and-white portraits capturing life in post-independence Mali. MAP continues this legacy by supporting emerging and established photographers and preserving Mali's rich photographic heritage.
