The National Museum of Mali, located in Bamako, is a beacon of African art and history. Established in 1953 as the Sudanese Museum under French colonial rule, it evolved into the National Museum of Mali after the country's independence in 1960, with a mission to promote national unity and celebrate Malian culture. The museum's architecture blends modern and traditional Malian designs. Inside, visitors can explore three permanent exhibition sections. The "Mali Millennium" exhibit displays archaeological discoveries, including terracotta pieces from Djenné and Thial. Another section showcases masterpieces of ritual art from various ethnic groups like the Dogon, Bamanan, and Senufo. A textiles exhibition displays nearly 200 textiles dating from the 11th century to the present. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions. Outside, concrete models of famous mosques of Timbuktu and Djenné are displayed. The museum's collection includes 10,000 objects, including ethnographic, archaeological, and West African art, along with 40,000 black and white photographs, 12,000 negatives, 500 audio recordings, and 300 video recordings. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm; it is closed on Mondays and certain public and religious holidays.
