Mali National Park: An Oasis in Bamako

Mali National Park, a green lung in the heart of Bamako, offers a refreshing escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Spanning 103 hectares within a larger 2,100-hectare protected forest, the park provides a vital greenbelt for the rapidly growing capital of Mali. Developed through a public-private partnership between the government and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the park was renovated and reopened in 2010 to mark the 50th anniversary of Mali's independence.The park's design emphasizes open spaces for leisure and educational activities, catering to the general public, school groups, and tourists. It integrates the National Museum, a botanical garden, and a zoo into a single, unified space. Visitors can explore a comprehensive pedestrian network with formal promenades, fitness tracks, and interpretive trails for botany, birdwatching, and nature appreciation. The park also features dedicated spaces for children, a sports center, and diverse dining options. Architect Diébédo Francis Kéré designed key structures within the park, including entry gates, a youth and sports center, a restaurant, and kiosks. These buildings are clad in local natural stone, reflecting Malian cultural heritage and promoting sustainable climate control through thermal mass and natural ventilation. The park's gardens showcase indigenous flora in various settings, including open lawns, flower gardens, wooded areas, and a medicinal garden.
