Discover more about Gate of Provence

The Gate of Provence, the third and final of Birgu's principal gates, is positioned on the inner side of Saint John Bastion. This imposing gate embodies the principles of military fortification and was among the last to be constructed. As you pass through the gate, you're immediately transported back in time, surrounded by the echoes of Malta's rich history. A marble tablet near the Gate of Provence commemorates the construction of the fortifications. This serves as a reminder of the city's title, "Vittoriosa" (Victorious), bestowed upon it for its resistance during the siege led by Soliman the Magnificent. Birgu served as the capital of Malta from 1530 until 1571, when the capital was moved to Valletta. Today, Birgu is known for its rich cultural heritage, architecture, and waterfront views. Visitors can explore the city's fort, churches, and wander through its alleys. Nearby attractions include the Inquisitor's Palace and the Maritime Museum.
