Ħaġar Qim: Malta's Ancient Standing Stones

The layout, resembling a woman's body, along with discovered clay figurines, suggests the temple served as a shrine to Mother Earth and fertility cycles. A 5.2-meter monolith may represent the male.Excavated in 1839, the site reveals the ingenuity of Neolithic builders who used local coralline and globigerina limestone. The temple's design incorporates astronomical alignments, with the central doorway aligned to the summer solstice sunrise, allowing sunlight to penetrate the temple. The largest stone used in Maltese megalithic architecture, weighing 57 tons, can be found in the Ħaġar Qim façade.Just 500 meters from Ħaġar Qim lies the Mnajdra temple complex, another remarkable site. A single ticket grants access to both sites and the visitor center, where you can explore exhibits, watch a 4D presentation, and learn about the temples' history and significance.
