Discover more about Mistra Battery

Mistra Battery, also known as Despirasse Battery, is an artillery battery located in Mistra Bay, Mellieħa, Malta. Built in 1761 by the Order of Saint John, it formed part of a network of coastal defenses around the Maltese Islands. The battery's construction was prompted by French military engineer Bourlamaque during the reign of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. The battery features a semi-circular gun platform, designed to maximize its defensive capabilities against naval threats. It also includes two blockhouses linked by a redan with musketry loopholes. The main entrance is adorned with the coats of arms of the Order, Grand Master Pinto, and the Bailli de Montagnac. Unusually, the battery is surrounded by a shallow, unfinished rock-hewn ditch. Throughout its history, Mistra Battery has seen periods of armament and disarmament. Originally equipped with three 24-pounder and six 8-pounder iron cannons, its armament was later reduced. During the French blockade of 1798-1800, Maltese insurgents removed the cannons. In later years, the battery served as a store for a fisheries company, undergoing some alterations before being restored and returned to the government. Today, Mistra Battery is considered the best-preserved of the Order's batteries in Malta, offering visitors a tangible connection to Malta's military history.
