Santa Marija Tower: Comino's Sentinel

Explore Comino's historic Santa Marija Tower: a 17th-century watchtower with panoramic views and a rich history of Maltese defense.

4.6

The Santa Marija Tower, also known as the Comino Tower, stands as a proud sentinel on the rugged island of Comino, between Malta and Gozo. Constructed in 1618 by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt of the Knights of St. John, it was the fifth of six Wignacourt towers built to protect the Maltese Islands. The tower formed part of a network that facilitated defense and communication between the Cittadella in Gozo and Mdina. Strategically positioned 80 meters above sea level, the square, bastioned watchtower provided a vantage point to monitor naval activity and guard against pirates and invading forces. Its thick walls, reaching six meters in width, and four corner turrets made it a formidable defensive structure. During the British period, the tower played a crucial role in protecting the anchorage and maintaining communications between Gozo and Malta. It even served as an isolation hospital and stable. In modern times, the Santa Marija Tower has been lovingly restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, a National Trust of Malta, and is open to visitors. A visit offers a journey back in time, with each stone whispering tales of Malta's maritime past. From the top, breathtaking views stretch across Comino, the Blue Lagoon, and the Mediterranean Sea to Gozo and Malta. A small chapel graces the top floor, offering a moment of serenity amidst the tower's robust history. The tower also gained fame as the prison Château d'If in the film 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. Today, a Maltese flag flying atop the tower signals that it is open to visitors.
