The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, located in Paola, Malta, is a fascinating and mysterious archaeological site dating back to the Neolithic period (3300-3000 BC). The Hypogeum, meaning "underground" in Greek, is a subterranean structure that served as both a sanctuary and a necropolis. Discovered in 1902 during construction work, it is one of the best-preserved examples of the Maltese temple-building culture. The Hypogeum consists of three levels, each revealing intricate details about the people who created it. The upper level, the oldest and closest to the surface, features burial chambers carved out of natural caves. The middle level showcases red ochre paintings and carvings that mirror architectural elements found in megalithic temples. The lower level, accessed via seven steps from the 'Holy of Holies' chamber, is the deepest and most mysterious.Archaeologists estimate that the remains of more than 7,000 individuals were interred within the Hypogeum. The site's design includes chambers, galleries, and burial chambers, reflecting the skills and artistry of the Neolithic people. Some chambers feature ceilings with carved stone rings, imitating the corbelled masonry roofs of above-ground temples. The walls and ceilings are decorated with spiral and honeycomb designs in red ochre, a mineral pigment.Visiting the Hypogeum is a unique experience, offering insights into the beliefs and practices of Malta's ancient inhabitants. Due to conservation concerns, only a limited number of visitors are allowed each day, making advance booking essential. The tour provides an audio guide in various languages, enhancing the experience with historical and archaeological information.
