    Discover more about Casa Bernard

Nestled in the heart of Rabat, Casa Bernard is a captivating historical landmark that provides a window into Malta's past. Originally a medieval watch tower built upon Roman foundations, it evolved into a double-fronted palazzo in the mid-16th century, later receiving Baroque enhancements. The house's name honors Dr. Salvatore Bernard, a French physician and personal doctor to the Grand Master of Malta, who resided here in 1723. The Bernard family, a lineage of doctors, occupied the palazzo until the second quarter of the 20th century. In 1993, Mr. and Mrs. Magri acquired Casa Bernard and meticulously restored it to its former glory. Today, they open their home to visitors, offering guided tours through the barrel-vaulted hallway, chapel, dining room, drawing rooms, library, and main bedroom. These tours showcase a collection of furniture, paintings, and objets d'art, each with its own story. The visit culminates in the courtyard and garden, providing a tranquil conclusion to the historical journey. Casa Bernard received a Europa Nostra award in 2006, recognizing its restoration as an exercise in good taste and a hidden gem of Malta.
