Discover more about It-Tempji tal-Ġgantija

The Ġgantija Archaeological Park, situated on Gozo's Xagħra plateau, is a unique prehistoric monument comprising two temple structures built between 3600 and 3200 BC. The name Ġgantija, derived from the Maltese word for "giant," reflects the local belief that giants constructed these massive structures. These temples predate Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, making them some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world. The builders of Ġgantija used both Coralline and Globigerina limestone. The more durable Coralline limestone forms the primary structure, while the softer Globigerina limestone was used for interior features like doorways and altars. The complex consists of two temples, each with apses flanking a central corridor and enclosed by a boundary wall. Archaeological evidence, including animal bones and stone hearths, suggests the site was used for religious rituals, possibly involving animal sacrifice.Visitors begin their exploration at the Interpretation Centre, which offers insights into Neolithic life and displays artifacts discovered at Gozitan prehistoric sites. A pathway leads from the center to the temples, providing panoramic views of the Gozitan landscape. The site has received accolades, including a 'Highly Commended' award by the British Guild of Travel Writers and a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.
