Triton Fountain: Valletta's Iconic Landmark

The Triton Fountain, or *Il-Funtana tat-Tritoni* in Maltese, stands as a proud symbol of Valletta and Malta itself. Situated in Floriana, at the entrance to Valletta, this iconic fountain is a significant example of Modernist architecture. Designed by sculptor Vincent Apap and draughtsman Victor Anastasi, its construction spanned from 1952 to 1959. The fountain features three bronze Tritons, two sitting and one kneeling, holding up a large basin. These figures, inspired by Rome's Fontana delle Tartarughe, represent Malta's historical and ongoing relationship with the sea.The fountain's base is constructed from concrete and clad in 730 tons of travertine slabs. Over the years, the fountain has undergone several changes and restorations. It was initially damaged in 1978, and despite repair attempts, it continued to deteriorate. A major restoration project, completed in 2018, returned the fountain to its original glory, just in time for Valletta to be named European Capital of Culture. Today, the Triton Fountain is not only a visual spectacle but also a testament to Maltese artistry and engineering.Visitors can appreciate the fountain's design, with the faces of the Tritons visible from City Gate. The water jets enhance the sense of movement and dynamism. The area around the fountain has been redesigned to provide unobstructed views, making it a perfect spot for photos. The fountain also has underground chambers and a pump room for maintenance.
