Discover more about Għar Dalam Cave

Għar Dalam, meaning 'Cave of Darkness,' is a 144-meter long cave located on the outskirts of Birżebbuġa, Malta. This cave is not just a geological formation; it's a time capsule, offering a unique window into Malta's natural and human history stretching back over 500,000 years. The cave is divided into several layers, each telling a different part of the story. The lowest layers, dating back over 500,000 years, contain the fossilized bones of dwarf elephants, hippopotami, micro-mammals, and birds that roamed Malta during the Pleistocene era. Above these layers lies the 'deer layer,' dating back approximately 18,000 years. The top layer, known as the 'cultural layer,' reveals the earliest evidence of human presence in Malta, dating back around 7,400 years. These remains suggest that the Maltese Islands were once connected to continental Europe.Visitors can explore the first 50 meters of the cave, observing the different geological layers and the remains of animals found within each layer. The on-site museum enhances the experience, displaying a remarkable collection of finds, from animal bones to human artifacts. The Joseph Baldacchino Hall features Victorian-style displays of ancient animal bones, while the George Zammit Maempel Hall offers detailed exhibits on the cave's history and the various species found in Maltese Quaternary deposits.Għar Dalam also holds ecological significance, forming part of the Natura 2000 network of protected sites. The site is home to a small population of endemic cave woodlouse and serves as a roosting site for the Lesser Horse-shoe Bat. A garden with indigenous plants and trees introduces visitors to the local flora.
