Discover more about Victoria Lines

The Victoria Lines, often called the Great Wall of Malta, represent a significant chapter in the island's military history. Constructed by the British between 1870 and 1899, the lines span approximately 12 kilometers, cutting across Malta along a natural escarpment known as the Great Fault. This strategic location provided a natural defensive barrier, enhanced by man-made fortifications. The lines were designed to protect the southern part of Malta, including the Grand Harbour, from potential invasions from the north. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 heightened the importance of Malta as a strategic naval base, prompting the British to fortify the island. The Victoria Lines consist of a network of forts, batteries, entrenchments, and infantry lines, creating a comprehensive defensive system. Key forts along the lines include Fort Bingemma, Fort Mosta and Fort Madliena. Despite their impressive design, the Victoria Lines were never tested in battle and were considered obsolete by the start of World War I. Today, they stand as a testament to British military engineering and offer a unique hiking experience. Walking along the lines, visitors can explore the ruins of the fortifications, enjoy panoramic views of the Maltese countryside, and discover the island's rich history. Although some sections have crumbled over time, the Victoria Lines remain an intrinsic part of Malta's historical heritage.
