Discover more about Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is a complex of sea caverns on Malta's southern coast, near the village of Żurrieq. Over millennia, the relentless action of waves against the island's limestone geology has sculpted these caves, each unique in size and shape. The grotto owes its name to a British soldier stationed in Malta during the 1950s; the beautiful hues of the caves reminded him of the Grotta Azzurra in Capri, Italy. Boat tours, operated by local fishermen, take visitors through a network of six stunning caves, each with its own distinctive features. The radiant blue waters, impressive arches, and diverse marine life promise an unforgettable adventure. Popular caves include Reflection Cave, Cat's Cave, Honeymoon Cave, and the Elephant Foot. The best time to visit the Blue Grotto is in the early morning when the sunlight shines directly into the caves, creating the iconic blue reflections on the water. The magical blue light effect is most pronounced in the morning hours, particularly in spring and early summer. The Blue Grotto has cultural significance for the locals, a symbol of Malta's natural beauty and seafaring history. The location has also been used in film productions such as Troy.
