Discover more about Casa Bernard

Casa Bernard is not just a museum; it's a family home that combines stunning architecture with a rich historical narrative. Originally a medieval watchtower built upon Roman foundations, the palazzo transformed into a double-fronted residence in the mid-16th century, later receiving Baroque enhancements. In 1723, Dr. Salvatore Bernard, physician to the Grand Master of Malta, took residence, giving the house its name. The Bernard family, a lineage of doctors, lived here until the 20th century. In 1993, Mr. and Mrs. Magri acquired the then-dilapidated palazzo and began a meticulous restoration, reviving it to its former glory. The couple, retired schoolteachers, personally conduct tours, sharing stories about the house's history and its many artifacts. Visitors can explore the barrel-vaulted hallway, family chapel (built upon Roman arches), dining room, drawing rooms, library, and main bedroom. The house features antique furniture, paintings, silverware and objets d'art. The tour concludes with a visit to the courtyard and walled garden.Casa Bernard provides a window into the aristocratic Maltese lifestyle, with knowledgeable guides bringing the history to life. The house won an award from Europa Nostra in 2006 for its restoration.
