Dingli Cliffs: Malta's Majestic Coastal Heights

Dingli Cliffs, situated on the western coast of Malta, present a dramatic and awe-inspiring natural landscape. These cliffs, the highest point in Malta at 253 meters, offer unparalleled panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the coastline, and the small, uninhabited island of Filfla. Legend has it that the cliffs and the village of Dingli are named after Sir Thomas Dingley, an English knight who settled in the area in the 16th century. Walking along the cliffs, visitors will find the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, a small, historic chapel on the cliff edge. Records mention the chapel as early as 1446, and it is known as the Chapel of the Cliffs due to its location. The surrounding area is ideal for hiking, with well-marked trails offering varying lengths and difficulty levels. The cliffs are also a popular spot for watching the sunset, with the sky and sea creating a stunning backdrop. Below the cliffs, one can observe terraced fields, a testament to the agricultural practices of the past. Farmers once cultivated these fields, using rubble walls to create stepped terraces. While some fields have been abandoned due to limited access and land fragmentation, the terraced landscape remains a significant feature of the area.
