Discover more about Għajn Tuffieħa Tower

Għajn Tuffieħa Tower, a historic coastal watchtower, stands proudly in Għajn Tuffieħa, near Mġarr. Constructed in 1637 as one of the Lascaris towers, it was designed by Italian architect Vincenzo Maculani and is almost identical to Lippija Tower. The tower's strategic location allowed it to maintain a line of sight with Lippija and Nadur Towers, forming part of a comprehensive early warning system.Originally armed with a ½-pounder gun, the tower was manned by a captain and three men, paid by the Università of Mdina. These men guarded against attacks and invaders. The tower has a square layout with two floors, each containing a single room, and a flat roof with a parapet. Access to the upper floor was originally via a wooden ladder. After falling into disrepair, the tower was restored in 2000 and further renovated by the Gaia Foundation, opening to the public in 2013. Today, visitors can explore the tower and its surroundings, including a peace grove with indigenous plants. The tower faces threats from coastal erosion, with cracks visible on the cliffs. From the tower, one can see the beautiful sandy beach and clear waters of Għajn Tuffieħa Bay.
