Discover more about Hagar Qim Temple

Perched atop a hill on Malta's southern coast, Hagar Qim offers a captivating journey into the island's ancient past. This megalithic temple complex, dating back over 5,000 years to 3600-3200 BC, stands as a testament to the ingenuity and skill of Malta's Neolithic people. Hagar Qim, meaning 'Standing Stones' or 'Worshipping Stones' in Maltese, is one of the most ancient religious sites on Earth. The Hagar Qim complex consists of a main temple and three additional structures. The main temple features a monumental facade leading to a central passage connecting oval chambers and semi-circular recesses. One of the most remarkable features is the 57-ton megalith, the largest stone used in Maltese megalithic architecture, found within the temple. The temple's design also incorporates astronomical alignments, with the central doorway aligned to the summer solstice sunrise. Archaeological excavations have revealed statues and altars, suggesting the temple was a place of worship and ritual, possibly dedicated to a fertility goddess. The site is now protected by a large canopy to preserve the megalithic structures. Just 500 meters from Hagar Qim lies the Mnajdra temple complex, another fascinating site that can be accessed via a comfortable walkway. Together, these temples offer a unique insight into the religious practices and architectural prowess of Malta's Neolithic ancestors.
