Discover more about Mnajdra Temple

Mnajdra, located on Malta's southern coast, is a captivating megalithic temple complex dating back over 5,000 years. This UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of three separate temples, each built during different prehistoric periods, offering a glimpse into the island's ancient past. The temples are constructed from both globigerina and coralline limestone, showcasing the ingenuity and resourcefulness of their builders. The oldest structure, the East Temple, dates back to 3600-3200 BC and features a simple three-apsed design. The South Temple is the most famous, known for its astronomical alignment with the equinoxes and solstices. During these celestial events, the sun's rays penetrate the temple's main doorway, illuminating specific decorated slabs inside. The Central Temple, built around 3150-2500 BC, sits on an artificially raised platform and has two main doorways. Archaeological discoveries at Mnajdra, including pottery fragments, stone tools, and altars, suggest the temples served as centers for community life and spiritual practices. The site's remote location adds to its mystical atmosphere, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and the islet of Filfla. Today, Mnajdra is protected by a large tent-like structure to preserve it from the elements. Visitors can explore the temples and learn about their history at the visitor center, which also provides a 4D introductory film.
