Discover more about Victoria Lines

The Victoria Lines, often referred to as the 'Great Wall of Malta', represent a unique monument of military architecture. Constructed by the British military between 1870 and 1899, these fortifications span approximately 12 kilometers across the island of Malta, utilizing the natural escarpment known as the Great Fault. The lines were designed to protect the harbors of Valletta from potential invasions landing on the north side of the island. The Victoria Lines consist of a network of forts, batteries, entrenchments, and infantry lines. Key forts along the lines include Fort Madliena, Fort Mosta, and Fort Bingemma. Although the lines were never tested in battle and were considered obsolete by World War I, they offer a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century military engineering.Today, the Victoria Lines serve as a popular hiking trail, offering stunning views of the Maltese countryside. Hikers can explore the remains of the fortifications, including the infantry wall, musketry loopholes, and various military structures. The trail passes through diverse terrain, including rugged paths, open countryside, and partially paved sections. While some sections are well-maintained, others may be overgrown or require detours along the road. Despite their state of ruin, the Victoria Lines remain an intrinsic part of Malta's historical heritage.
