Discover more about Mistra Gate

Mistra Gate, or Bieb tal-Mistra in Maltese, is a historical landmark in St. Paul's Bay, Malta. Constructed in 1760, the gate served as the principal entrance to a vast estate belonging to the Monte della Redenzione degli Schiavi (Mount of the Redemption of Slaves). This organization was established in 1607 by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt to collect funds for the redemption of Christians enslaved in Muslim territories. The gate's architecture is a fine example of the Baroque style, adorned with the coats of arms of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, the Monte di Redenzione, and the Balìs Claudius de Montagne de Lafeuliere and Carlo Maria Olgiati. The estate itself was bequeathed to the Monte di Redenzione in 1619 by noblewoman Caterina Vitale and once included the land where Selmun Palace was later erected. Over the centuries, Mistra Gate has undergone several restorations. A significant restoration occurred in 1937, followed by another between 1995 and 1998, led by Din l-Art Ħelwa, a Maltese heritage organization. These efforts ensured the gate's preservation for future generations. Today, Mistra Gate is a Grade 1 national monument, offering visitors a glimpse into Malta's strategic past and architectural beauty. The surrounding area offers scenic views and a tranquil atmosphere, inviting exploration of nearby historical sites and the natural beauty of St. Paul's Bay.
